The Land
In the rolling foothills of the Outeniqua Mountains along the Ruiterbos Road, mere minutes from Mossel Bay, Flora Bay thrives on ancient fynbos soils and crisp coastal breezes. This pristine Western Cape haven, acquired by passionate owner Dudley Wooldridge, nurtures indigenous flora sustainably, blending rugged beauty with innovative farming.
The Flowers
Our proteas, leucadendrons, and leucospermums burst with vibrant hues, and each fiery red, sunny yellow, and sunset pink bloom is a testament to nature’s bold palette. Hand-picked at peak perfection, these indigenous stars supply Joan’s Florist and retailers across South Africa.
The People
At Flora Bay, our dedicated team of expert farm workers tends every plant with unwavering care, their hands shaping blooms that reach homes nationwide. Owner Dudley Wooldridge, whose love for flowers began with teenage deliveries for Joan’s Florist over 40 years ago, leads with deep passion for both craft and community.

Our Process

Planting
We begin in the sun-drenched fynbos fields of the Outeniqua foothills, sowing seeds from March to May or rooting cuttings from December to April in well-drained, acidic sands enriched with peat. Each planting draws on South Africa’s ideal climate to spark life in our protea, leucadendron, and leucospermum varieties.

Growing
Nurtured by coastal mists and mountain air, our plants thrive through autumn and spring, watered deeply but infrequently to mimic wild fynbos rhythms. Over 15 years, we’ve refined this dance with nature, growing sturdy stems and vivid blooms that withstand seasons, preparing them for harvests that celebrate both beauty and sustainability.

Harvesting
At dawn’s first light, our skilled hands select only the finest blooms, protea kings unfurling like armoured crowns, leucadendrons blushing in pinks, at their vibrant peak. Guided by SAPPEX standards, we cut cleanly, hydrate immediately, and cool swiftly for nationwide journeys to florists and major national retailers.

Handwork
Every petal passes through devoted hands. Our farm workers, the unsung artists of Flora Bay, prune, bundle, and pack with precision born of passion. From field to bouquet, this human touch infuses soul into each stem, reflecting owner Dudley’s vision of quality that honours people and place.
