About
Vision & Mission
Rooted in fynbos, committed to tomorrow
Flora Bay’s vision is to redefine what a modern protea farm can be: a place where biodiversity, livelihoods and exceptional floral quality exist in lasting balance. Set in the foothills of Ruiterbos, between Mossel Bay and Oudtshoorn, the farm is shaped by the meeting of rich mountain soils and cooling coastal breezes from the Indian Ocean; conditions that allow some of South Africa’s most distinctive flowers to thrive. Surrounded by the rugged beauty of the Outeniqua Mountains and the unique fynbos landscape, Flora Bay is both a working farm and a reflection of its environment.
Our mission is grounded in careful, considered cultivation. We grow proteas and fynbos in a way that supports the long-term health of the land, guided by water-wise practices, indigenous biodiversity protection, and a hands-on approach to farming. Each season brings its own rhythm. From early growth to the vivid colour of blooming fields, every stem is shaped by this natural cycle as well as the skill of the people who tend it.
Originally established over 15 years ago, the farm has evolved under the stewardship of Dudley Wooldridge, who expanded its production and introduced new varieties, building on its strong foundation. Today, Flora Bay supplies florists, national retailers and international markets, with exports reaching as far as Holland. Continued investment, including the development of a 3000m² tunnel system, supports a growing range of cut flowers while maintaining consistent quality.
Looking ahead, Flora Bay is focused on sharing the landscape more fully, through the development of walking trails and thoughtfully positioned accommodation, while remaining rooted in its core values: sustainability, craftsmanship and a deep respect for the land that makes it all possible.
OUR VALUES
“At Flora Bay, we cultivate proteas while nurturing resilience: in soil, in community, and in the supply chains that connect our stems to homes and ceremonies across South Africa. Each bloom is proof that commercial success and ecological repair are inseparable.”
The Land
In the rolling foothills of the Outeniqua Mountains along the Ruiterbos Road, mere minutes from Mossel Bay, Flora Bay thrives on ancient fynbos soils and crisp coastal breezes. This pristine Western Cape haven, acquired by passionate owner Dudley Wooldridge, nurtures indigenous flora sustainably, blending rugged beauty with innovative farming. Here, the earth whispers stories of resilience, inviting hikers and cyclists to explore hidden trails amid wild protea blooms.
Site mapping, soil audits and microclimate analysis guide where and what we plant. Instead of flattening the landscape to a production template, we design beds around contours, shelterbelts, and natural corridors to support pollinators and wildlife. Fire and invasive species are managed strategically, combining controlled burns, targeted removals and native reseeding. Every intervention is tested, monitored and adjusted so that conservation outcomes advance alongside consistent, high-quality yields.

The Flowers
At Flora Bay, our dedicated team of expert farm workers tends every plant with unwavering care, their hands shaping blooms that reach homes nationwide. Owner Dudley Wooldridge, whose love for flowers began with teenage deliveries for Joan’s Florist over 40 years ago, leads with deep passion for both craft and community. We’re building bonds through farm picnics and a budding nursery, honouring the hands that cultivate our shared legacy.
We select and manage varieties for ecological fit, vase life, and market demand. Horticultural protocols such as timed pruning, biological nutrition and microclimate controls, preserve pigment and longevity. Harvest timing is data-driven: we cut at physiological stages that maximise opening and transport resilience. Post-harvest systems (immediate hydration, graded cooling, and traceable packing) protect quality from field to buyer. Our aim: unmistakable fynbos character delivered reliably and transparently to retail partners and florists.
Proteas are among the oldest flowering plants on earth, dating back over 300 million years. Indigenous to South Africa, they are symbols of transformation, courage, and diversity.

The People
At Flora Bay, every bloom is shaped by the hands and knowledge of a deeply experienced team. Our nine full-time staff members bring over 50 years of combined expertise in cultivating proteas and related fynbos, working across 115 hectares of diverse terrain. Their understanding of the land, including its slopes, soils and seasonal rhythms, guides every decision in the field.
Our approach to people is intentional: we prioritise local employment, fair wages and ongoing training in pruning, post-harvest handling and ecological care. This ensures that every action supports both the health of the land and the quality of the flowers. We encourage shared knowledge and practical feedback, allowing those closest to the work to continuously refine how we farm.
The team is part of what makes Flora Bay a place to experience. The farm’s varied landscape invites quiet exploration, walking among protea fields shaped by nature and the skill and care of the people who tend them.
