Process
Planting
We begin in the sun-drenched fynbos fields of the Outeniqua foothills, sowing seeds from March to May or rooting cuttings from December to April in well-drained, acidic sands enriched with peat. Each planting is a promise and spaced for vigour, mulched for moisture, drawing on South Africa’s ideal climate to spark life in our protea, leucadendron, and leucospermum varieties. This careful start yields resilient roots, ready to flourish under our watchful care.
Planting at Flora Bay begins with matching species and clones to specific micro-sites. We prepare root zones, correct pH where needed, and use organic amendments to jumpstart soil biology. Spacing balances production with airflow and pollinator access. Transplants are installed in cooler seasons to reduce shock and mulched immediately to conserve moisture. Each block is instrumented for early monitoring so we can intervene quickly if establishment falters. Effective planting is a strategic investment that reduces future inputs and improves survival.

Growing
Nurtured by coastal mists and mountain air, our plants thrive through autumn and spring, watered deeply but infrequently to mimic wild fynbos rhythms. Our expert team monitors soil pH and nutrients, using biological methods to promote health without excess. Over 15 years, we’ve refined this dance with nature, growing sturdy stems and vivid blooms that withstand seasons, preparing them for harvests that celebrate both beauty and sustainability.
Growing is adaptive and data-informed. We use deficit-irrigation to encourage deep rooting, soil-first nutrition to support microbial networks, and precise canopy work to shape stems for market. Integrated pest management favours habitat provisioning, beneficials and selective biologicals over broad chemical use. Sensors and physiological checks time interventions to need, not habit. Trial plots test resilient selections and methods; successful practices are scaled. The goal: consistent, market-ready stems produced with minimal ecological cost.

Harvesting
At dawn’s first light, our skilled hands select only the finest blooms, protea kings unfurling like armoured crowns, leucadendrons blushing in pinks, at their vibrant peak. Guided by SAPPEX standards, we cut cleanly, hydrate immediately, and cool swiftly for nationwide journeys to our major national retailers. This meticulous ritual ensures every flower arrives fresh, a living emblem of Flora Bay’s commitment to excellence and the land’s enduring gifts.
Harvesting is timed and tactical. Teams work in cool morning windows, making clean botanical cuts and hydrating stems immediately. Grading follows strict criteria for stem integrity, bract condition and longevity; sub-grade material is diverted to secondary uses to avoid waste. Rapid, protea-specific cooling and traceable packing maintain vase life through transport. Logistics are synchronised with market windows, so stems spend minimal time out of the cold chain. Good harvests are the product of planning, technique and disciplined handling.
